Experience Unscripted, Real Stories about Life in India
December 17, 2025Offbeat Travel India: Experience Culture Beyond the Tourist Routes
What do you think of a vacation in India? Let’s address the hiccups head-on.
1) Cookie-cutter Itineraries: Why Every India Tour Feels the Same
For decades, international tourists have been sold the same old routes of traveling in India, comprising Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Varanasi and other such popular destinations. Most known travel companies often follow the same itineraries – taking people to overpacked touristy spots, serving butter chicken, a picture in front of Taj Mahal, the same spicy street food in crowded cities and buying the typical overpriced artifacts as souvenirs.
2) Rushed Schedules: When Travel in India Becomes Exhausting
You book a long-deserved vacation and end up setting up more alarms than usual! The journey seems more packed than your work calendars, you are checking your watches continuously throughout the trip and reach home more tired than relaxed!
Did this ever happen to you? If yes, then an offbeat travel route at less crowded vacation spots, exploring authentic cultural experiences at a slow pace will definitely make your India trip better.
A Slow Travel Mindset to Explore India
At Unfollow Travel, we don’t just promise you an authentic offbeat trip to India in its truest sense, but deliver the same. To begin with, we stay away from the Golden Triangle tourist circuit! Our travel options stay clear of tiring rushed itineraries, crowded tourist spots and superficial activities that are only meant to lure foreign travellers for mere commercial purposes.
What Does Slow Travel to Offbeat India Look Like?
Imagine a homestay surrounded by a family-run coffee plantation. Waking up to birdsongs, you are immersed in the environment at a relaxed pace, talking to the locals who are taking care of plantation work. The hosts are sharing a story of resilience about how the plantation came into the care of their grandparents, childhood stories of growing up in this remote location, how the region has evolved over the years and how they are dealing with the challenges of climate change events. All this while sipping the very coffee you are listening about.
Does this speak to you over checking tick boxes, running to catch up with the same ‘10 things to do in India’ that you keep reading about? If yes, then you would love the concept of slow travel.
The best way to experience an offbeat trip in India is through a slow travel mindset. It is a large country with varied landscapes, cuisine, cultures and immersive activities to be indulged in. Instead of rushing through destinations across the country, you can stay in one particular region or area, exploring places nearby that suit your interests, hobbies or passions. Ideally 4-5 days in each location (instead of moving after just 2 days) is great to immerse yourself with a tailor-made itinerary at your choice of pace. This kind of experience only happens when you slow down, taking the time to truly connect with people by exchanging stories, and becoming part of the atmosphere rather than quickly passing by on a day trip. And that is exactly what I have been offering travellers from the UK, Canada, Australia, Europe and the USA for more than two years now.
What Danny & Lisa (USA) say: “Our first trip to India was the usual Golden Triangle. For the second visit, we were adamant to explore something offbeat and remote. Luckily, we found Sayali, and she introduced us to slow travel. She helped us plan a realistic itinerary for Assam with amazing experiences over 10 days. The weather was good, we tried local food, met tribal communities, and stayed at a colonial British bungalow turned into a homestay, in the middle of nature. We literally woke up to the sounds of birds. We never imagined experiencing India in this way. Highly recommend to anyone looking for something beyond the usual tourist routes in India”.

Things You’ll Want to Know
1) What is an ideal way to travel offbeat in India?
Offbeat trips are about experiencing lesser-known regions (beyond typical tourist circuits) through its culture, cuisine and people (beyond typical sightseeing and social trends) at a slow pace by engaging with your curiosity and channeling your inner traveler instead of being just another tourist.
2) How many days should I spend on an offbeat slow travel trip?
An offbeat slow travel trip should be about staying 4-7 days in one place with 2 immersive activities in a day. You can go as slow as you need, as per your travel style! Ideally, for India, I suggest a minimum of two weeks to explore a region to its fullest. For more regions, a minimum of three weeks is great. Usually, our travellers from Europe and the UK prefer a 2-weeks region-specific trip. 3-4 weeks for an immersive monthly vacation is loved by travellers from Australia.
3) How will I know if I will love to explore the offbeat side of India instead of the tourist routes?
- If you prefer cultural immersion over a typical sightseeing bucket list.
- If you want to avoid rushed tourist-y crowds.
- If you value sustainability and supporting local communities.
- If unique heritage homestays appeal to you more than hotel chains.
Simply put, if you prefer depth over breadth, while travelling, you’ll love to travel offbeat in India and experience a side of the country untold!
4) Will travelling offbeat in India be more expensive than regular tours?
No. Offbeat Travel is not expensive. At Unfollow Travel, we work as per our guests’ budget. We tailor the itineraries accordingly, by choosing accommodations and including experiences that suit your budget.
5) When is the best time for UK / European / Canadian / Australian travellers to visit India?
The usual inbound travel season in India is October – March. You can travel anytime within these months. However, one can also opt for the monsoon season, which is offbeat and one of a kind. You can experience surreal road trips in Maharashtra during this time.
6) Which regions in India are best for offbeat travel?
India has a lot to offer beyond the Golden Triangle. You can slow travel anywhere across India, but here are some of mine and our travellers’ favourites:
- Uttarakhand & Himachal for the Himalayas in North India
- Gujarat & Maharashtra for Sahyadris and village life in West India
- Assam and Meghalaya for tribal culture in North-East India
- Wayanad, Vagamon, Coonoor for Nilgiris and coffee plantations in South India
Exploring Maharashtra in monsoons is also a unique offbeat experience.
7) Is India safe for solo travellers?
We work with solo travellers and accompany them on the tour too. India is perfect for a solo traveller, especially the North Indian regions of Himachal and Uttarakhand.
8) Is travelling offbeat in India safe? Will there be a tour guide accompanying us?
Yes, it is! With Unfollow Travel, a dedicated journey host will be accompanying you and will take care of every end-to-end detail of the tour so that you can relax and focus on enjoying the experience.
