5 Amazing Benefits of Slow Travelling in India
January 6, 2026Experience Unscripted, Real Stories about Life in India
“Where do you find such mind-blowing experiences?”
A guest asked us this after spending a day with a Kumaoni family in Peora, a village in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand, India.
Our answer was simple: We don’t find them. We create them.
By bringing curious travellers into real homes. Into real stories and into everyday life that doesn’t need high-end amenities to feel meaningful.
The best way to experience India is through offbeat travel routes and less crowded vacation spots, where you can explore genuine cultural experiences at a slow pace. Travel is meant to be relaxing and create ‘once in a lifetime’ memories, while experiencing ‘a slice of life’ of the local people who call the place their home.
Sometimes it can be as simple as seeing how a family in the mountains heats water without a geyser, because that’s their normal. Sometimes it can be as simple as seeing how a family in the mountains heats water without a geyser, because that’s their normal. At other times, it can be about learning a culinary tip passed down through generations or joining village families in foraging or harvesting fresh produce in their backyard – as every house grows its own vegetables. For a traveller, such tiny details become a window into a whole new way of living.
Authentic Travel Experiences in India
We don’t script conversations. We don’t guide people on what to say. We introduce the travellers to the local communities and simply make the two worlds meet organically to let the magic unfold through genuine conversations and real, authentic experiences.
Travellers, as curious as they are, are meant to have questions.“How do villagers farm? How do they manage to sustain through the off-season? How do they survive without high-end amenities that we depend on in the cities? How do people manage their waste?” For most people coming from foreign countries, this is a side of India they have never seen – in movies, articles, photographs and even in travel blogs.
Away from the bustling cities and popular tourist circuits like the Golden Triangle, lies an India in its villages and offbeat regions. Here, there’s a quiet sustainability in the local communities’ lifestyle, teaching us what we’ve forgotten in cities. And local families have real stories and generations of knowledge to share. People connect even without a common language if the interactions are real and honest. And in these simple, honest moments, the most mind-blowing experiences quietly take shape.
With us, you will only find these unscripted experiences because we make you travel slowly, away from the rushed crowds at the typical tourist places promoted by most travel companies. We connect you with the real India through honest interactions with local people that introduce you to the untold side of the country like never before.

Things You’ll Want to Know
1) What is an ideal way to travel offbeat in India?
Offbeat trips are about experiencing lesser-known regions (beyond typical tourist circuits) through its culture, cuisine and people (beyond typical sightseeing and social trends) at a slow pace by engaging with your curiosity and channeling your inner traveler instead of being just another tourist.
2) How many days should I spend on an offbeat slow travel trip?
An offbeat slow travel trip should be about staying 4-7 days in one place with 2 immersive activities in a day. You can go as slow as you need, as per your travel style! Ideally, for India, I suggest a minimum of two weeks to explore a region to its fullest. For more regions, a minimum of three weeks is great. Usually, our travellers from Europe and the UK prefer a 2-weeks region-specific trip. 3-4 weeks for an immersive monthly vacation is loved by travellers from Australia.
3) How will I know if I will love to explore the offbeat side of India instead of the tourist routes?
- If you prefer cultural immersion over a typical sightseeing bucket list.
- If you want to avoid rushed tourist-y crowds.
- If you value sustainability and supporting local communities.
- If unique heritage homestays appeal to you more than hotel chains.
Simply put, if you prefer depth over breadth, while travelling, you’ll love to travel offbeat in India and experience a side of the country untold!
4) Will travelling offbeat in India be more expensive than regular tours?
No. Offbeat Travel is not expensive. At Unfollow Travel, we work as per our guests’ budget. We tailor the itineraries accordingly, by choosing accommodations and including experiences that suit your budget.
5) When is the best time for UK / European / Canadian / Australian travellers to visit India?
The usual inbound travel season in India is October – March. You can travel anytime within these months. However, one can also opt for the monsoon season, which is offbeat and one of a kind. You can experience surreal road trips in Maharashtra during this time.
6) Which regions in India are best for offbeat travel?
India has a lot to offer beyond the Golden Triangle. You can slow travel anywhere across India, but here are some of mine and our travellers’ favourites:
- Uttarakhand & Himachal for the Himalayas in North India
- Gujarat & Maharashtra for Sahyadris and village life in West India
- Assam and Meghalaya for tribal culture in North-East India
- Wayanad, Vagamon, Coonoor for Nilgiris and coffee plantations in South India
Exploring Maharashtra in monsoons is also a unique offbeat experience.
7) Is India safe for solo travellers?
We work with solo travellers and accompany them on the tour too. India is perfect for a solo traveller, especially the North Indian regions of Himachal and Uttarakhand.
8) Is travelling offbeat in India safe? Will there be a tour guide accompanying us?
Yes, it is! With Unfollow Travel, a dedicated journey host will be accompanying you and will take care of every end-to-end detail of the tour so that you can relax and focus on enjoying the experience.
9) Will I get help with my visa and other procedures?
Yes.
10) What are the inclusions and exclusions?
You’ll receive these in the product docket once you get in touch.
